DISCUSSION
In responding \0 CoonciI's ISsignmcnllo prioriti7.e furtllCf ",boo! cooidors, staff identified three
alternalive approaches to defining the "study are." for future safety s~.Klies. These were the
cc<>eeplS presental to the City/School Traffic Safety Committee a' its M arcb 1994 meeting and
snbsequently reviewed by the CityiScboo! Liaison Committee in April 1994.
ApproIlCIt '1: Individual Scltool Atl",,,[allce Area SIIIJti'res
In this concept, • single school attend"""e are .. would be selected and I focused s;'udy

Each individual aIIendaoce area study would cost $10,000 10 $20,000, and would take
3-4 monlhs 10 complete once the consultan! is hired.
App,oad '2: SlMdy ofMllljD' Arterial Corridors
A study 0( this nature would focus on map arterial streets identified by the s<hooIs
including Middlefield Road, At.stradero Road. El Camino Real, Oregoo Expressway
and Embarcadero Road. By definition, this study would not in<olude student commute

Dear Ms Ukens,
I am writing at the request ofMs Marty Wharlon,Gunn'. P.TSA. safe!}'
representative, who attended your 0cI00er 14 meeting. I wouid like Ie> strongly
second her appeal for. rev'.ew of the .. .,tran",r.xi! problems on Arastr.dero at
Gunn High School.
The morning back-up along Arastrad""o is more than .. frustration; it is .. hazard
and • concerr. StudoIllS and parenlS occupy u..e rigM-hand lane along with
commuters heading for the industrial parks across Foothill. along Miran<! .. and
beyond. This combination creates severe congestion and poses problems foe the
drivers. bikers, an<! joggers. Fruslraled drivers sometimes drive across the bike path
and side-walk 10 OIlier the school. endangering foo! and bike traffic along the poth.
A right-tum lar,. dedkaled 10 the Gunn traffic from 7-.30 ID S;30 •. m. similar 10 the
arrangement for Palo Alto High Sd.ool traffic o! Alma and Churchill might help. I
realize thot widerJng the roz.d 10 ae.te a right turn la.."" and preserve two lanes for
throogh traffic, though p..-eviously proposed, would be a challe."lge for many
reasons. Perhaps it is time to revisit the idea of access flO the campus from Barron
Park.
The purpose of this letter is 10 underscore the problem and 10 raise it 10 the
attention ol the Traffic Safely Committee.
