The proposed wall will be constructed of granite panels with the
names of the donors etched into the granite surface. Bron-ze
plaques containing historic photos of Palo Alto and s.i.gnificant
quotationo will be trlountp.d on the granite.
The Public Arts Corrmission, Historic Resources Board, Architectural
Revie)f Board and Planning Comnission have reviewed and corrrnented on
the proposal. All the Boards and Corrrnissions wholeheartedly
endorsed the propos-al and Gomplimented the Committee on their fund
raisIng, the cooperative efforts of many people to make the wall a
reality, and the deBign and quality of the proposed Centennial
Wall. various conditione have been recommended by staff and the
reviewing Boaro ana Commissions. They are as follows:
1. The vertical pilast.er shall cover all of the conduit to the
top of the parapet.
2. The horizontal splice box at the top of the building wall
shall be relocated if feasible.

height as existing. The tree brackets at the Centennial Wall

4. The curb width encroachment into the alley shall not exceed 14
inches.
5. Prior to submission for a building permit .• the property Olmer
shall obtain an encroachment permit/temporary lease from the
Public Works Sngineering Department for a structure in the
pt.:.blic t'ight-ot-way and for the proposed construction which
will impact th~ use of the alley in whi.ch the City holds an
interest.
6·. prior to conatructior.. the appl icant shall obtain from the
building owner, for. tile benefit of the City, a waiver and hold
harmless agreement to protect the City from liability
resulting from any damage to the building, during zmd after
construction of the Centennial W.all. This agreement shall be
in a (om) acceptable to the-City Attorney.
'J'he palo Alto Cent.enni.al Wall Comnittee, the bui Iding Nmer and
statf have agt"eed to the conditions of approval, and the Public
Works Departm~nt has agreed to ongoing (l\aintenC\llce of the
Centennial Wall.

'1'his project has been determined to be categorically Exempt under
CEQA.
Staff recoornends that the Council approve the installation of the
Centennial Wall with the cOl'~,:lition8 as listed abcve.
