Report in Brief The purpose of this pub1 ic hearing is to receive objections from affected property OII/!lCrS of proposed assessments related to completed weed abatement work, Ba.ckground The Fire flfarahal' s Off ice for Santa Clara County administers the contract for weed abatement. within the City of Palo Alto, ira accordance with an agl-eement between the City and County. On November 8. 1993, in accOl .... dance with Chapter 8.08 of tile Palo Alto lo1:unicipal Code. City Council declared weeds to be a nuisance and ordered tha.t the nuisance be abated. A Public Hearing "'as held on December 13, 1993. fOl" the objections to the prol>osed destruction or removal of the weeds. Once the above steps had been taken, the County Fire Marshal's Office instructed its contractor to abate · .... eede on City and private properties within P;1.1o Alto. That work has now been completed. Property owners were notified the first week in November 1993 that weeds were to be abated by March l~ 1994, either by the Q\rmers~ or by the County. If the property O\'mers chose to have the County abate the weeds. the abat~ment charges were levied against the respective properties as an assessnlent by the Co\mty Assessor. Those not abating the weeds were since informed by the County of the costs for destroying and removing the weeds, The Fire Department has published the necessary notice of this hearing in the Palo Alto Weekly. After these recalculationfl are completed, the asseSSl'nent will be submitted to the Coanty Assessor for ontry on the next tax roll upon which general City taxes are to ~ collected. The amounts of the cost for abating the nuisance are conthmed and those remaining unpaid, as shown on Rxhiblr-, -A" attached hereto and irlcorporated herein, shall constitute opecial assessments against the, respective parcels of land and arc a lien on the property for the amount of the respective assessment. The unpaid assessments shown on Kxhibit IIA'I shall be entered upon the 1994·95 tax-roll against the parcels of land and shall be collecled at the uarne time and in the same manner as general City taxes, be subject to the same interest and penalties, and be subject to the same pl'ocedul:e and sale in case of delinquency.
