Report in Brief
This is an informational report on the installation of rubberized
railroad crossings adjacent to the Alma Street/East Meado .... Road and
Alma Street/East Charleston Read intersections. No council action
is required.
Bgckground
In 1991 and 1992~ the City installed street and traffic
improvements for the Alma Street/West Meadow Road and Alma
Street/8ast Charleston Road i1'ltersections {CMRs:467:91 and 320:92).
In conjunction with these improvements, the City and Cal crans
entered into agreements for che Joint Powers Board (JPB) to
construct vehicle gateB~ pedestrian gates. a siynal warning system
and rubberized railroad crossings adjacent to each intersection
(CMRe:56B:91 and 181:92i. The JPB has completed all improvements~
except the rubberized rail~oae crossings~

The JPB 'Will be installing rubberized railroad crossings a.t the
~~4/West Meado~ and Alma/Charleston intersections from December
1.993 through February 1994. Work requiring clo6ur~ of the railroad
crossing to vehicular. bike and pedestrian t'I'affi.c has been
scheduled on Saturdays to minimize the impact on commute train and
vehicle travel. as indicated on the attached schedule (Attachment
A). The work will take place between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and
9:00 p.m. with most of the noise generating activitias occurring
before S: 00 p.m. The timing has been coordinated with City.
Stanford and world Cup accivities. The schedule may need to be
adjusted. if the JPB work crews are needed to respond to
emergencies at other railroad locations or if there i6 inclement
weather.

The school District and reside-nces adjac-ent to these crossing
locations will be notified of the scheduled wc·rk beforehand. Also,
traffic control signage and barricades \liill be set up p:::"'C'r to e",-:h
closure and a City representati vef:: \l{ill be onsite during the
closure.
