The Municipal Code (2 ~08.020J requires Council approval for the
City Manager'$ appoint~ents of Depa~tment Heads~ I am pleased to
present for your approval the appointment of Edwar-d Mrizek as
Director of Utilities. Ed comes to the position as the outstanding
candidate from a nationwide search and a qroup of well-qualified
finalists. As you kno'W from your interactions with him, Ed has a
bro~d base of experience and knowledge of our Utility system and
has successfully served as Acting Director of Utilities for the
past seven months.
Ed gra~uated from Northwestern University ~ith a Bachelor's
in Electrical Enqineer-inq. He has an extensive and
engineering bacKground and has been honoreQ by the American
Gas Association for his many accomplishments.

Edward Krizek Appointed Palo Alto Utilities Oirector
Edward J. Krizek was appointed today Director of Utilities for the
city ot Pa~o Alto. currently serving as Acting Director or
Utilities, Krizek was selected following an extensive nationwide
.earch. The appointment, announced by City Manager June Fleming,
is subject to City Council confirmation at its meeting of September
27 r 1993.
A Palo Alto resident, Mrizek began his career with the City of Palo
Alto in 19~9 as a utility Engineer and rose through promotions to
Assistant Director of Utilities. His vast experience in
engineering includes ongoing managemeT.t of the Utilities
.Infrastructure Program established to maintain and auqment the
city's utility systems. His management philosophy emphasizes long
range planninq and proqressiva technology. A graduate of
Northwestern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical
Engineering, Krizek is an ~ctive member and past President of the
American Public Gas Association, 'Which has honored him with several
awards.
Krizek's appointment is effective October 4, 1993. His
responsibilities include managing the City-owned and operated
Public utility, which includes 213 employees and an annual
operating and capital expencU ture budget of $11.1,800,000. His,
startinq salary is $110,656 per year.
