COPPER AND NICKEL, POI.UrrANTS OF GREATEST CONCERN Sludies by the RIVQCP have led RWQCP pollution prevention programs 10 focus effons on IWO pollutants: copper and nickel. Copper and nickel enler Ihe RWQCP frorn many sources. including re.sidences J commercial busine~s, industrial operalions., infiltralion and inflow (III) of ground and surface waler into (he sewer system,' and corrosion' of drinking water piping in buildings (S<C Figures I and 2). Bolh pollutants are polenlially conlrollab1c through pollulion prevention (source control) methods, and discharges of both have exceeded current discharge permil effluent limitations (4.9 micrograms per liler for copper and 8.3 micIOgrams per Ii ter for nickel) during 1993. Over the 1"113 )'ears. Ihe RIVQCP topper a"d nickel discharge has d«linoo substantiaJly, as shown in Hgure 3 (on the nexl page). These metals discharge reductions resuH from acHons taken by both the RWQCP and dischargers. Industrial dischargers regulatoo through the RWQCP PlCtreatment Program have substantially red uced the amount of copper I nickel, and other metats delivered to the plant.
