BACKGROUND
On Januaty 31. 1994 ~ "Is. Min)' C. DiWOY, Rxecuti ve Director of the
Palo .Alto Centennial,Board. requestf1d the City consider renaming
Lane 12 Bast t."o Cont.ennial \oalalk (letter 'attached). The purpose
of the nama change is to CO\'rmemorale the City' $ centennial and to
proVide" an appropriate set"ting tor display of bronze plaques
containing the names of donora to the centennial effort.' Ms.
Davey inditated that she would'~ork with the owner of the
University Arts building iocated at 261 Hamilton Avenue to secure
permlssion to affix the no'", street sign' on the wall adjacent to
the donor plaques.
This request-was forwarded to the Street Names Corrrnittee of thE:l
PalO. Alto Historical Association, which rec(){'{Wends in favor of
the requested street name change (letter attached). The City's
Convnunications Division )las reviewed the proposed name C'lnd has
found no confl icc ~Il'ith similar names in the City or adjacent
jurisdictions.
The owners of the properties directly adjacent to the alley were
. sent a letter' informing them of the requested ntir.\O change and
copies of, this staff report will be made available upon their
request,
RECOMMBNDATION
Staff and the Street Names Comrrtittec of the Palo Alto Uistoric.al
Association recorrmend that the City Council approve t.ho attached
resolution renaming Lane 12 Bal;lt to Centennial Walk.

RBSOLUTION OF TIlE C<.lUNCIL OF TIIB CITY OF PALO AL'I'O
CHANGING THI1 NAME OF A CITY ALLBY TO CENTENNIAL
WALK
WHEREAS, the City of palo Alto (the ·City") has rec-eived a
request to consider changing the name of the City alley currently
known as Lane 12 Bast to Centennial Walk, and the individual making
the request has agreed to provide a location on an adjacent
building to erect. a new street sig;) to reflect the name changej and
WHEREAS, in compliance with City Policy and Procedu~e 1~16,
the' Street. Names Committee of the Palo Alto Historical AEl8ociation
has unanimously recommended in favor of the requested name change
oecause the name Centennial Walk. will coiTit1emorate the City' B
centennial year; and
WHBRRAS, the Communiciltione Division of the City Police
Depa1."tmAnt has found no conflict with similar str.eet names within
the City or adjacent jurisrlictions; and
trnBRBAS, the City Council finds that the narr~ of the alley
should be changed to Centennial NaIl<: to provide an appropriate
setting for plaques to display the names of donors to the City'S
centennial celebrationi
NOtr, THERBFORB. the Council of the City of Palo Alto docs
hereby RESOLVE as follows:

Lane 12 East shall be changed to Centennial Walk, effective upon
the adoption of this Resolution, The City Manager or her designee
is hereby directed to have a City street sign erected to reflect.
the new alley name upon receiving confi.rmation that the owner of
the property located' at 261 Hamilton Avenue, Palo Alto, haD agreed
to allow the City to affix a sign ~t the corner of the building
diJ:ectly adjacent to the ent,rance of the alley.
SECTIoN 2. The City Clerk is hereby directed to fon.,'ard a
certified copy of this resolution to the Board of Supervisors of
Santa Clara County, California.
