Report ~o cloty council Re Weekend c:tos~e of 80se Syiw. ~ Heabera o~ the couneil: ~§P~:trt iD 8rie~ The ~urpose of this report is to ~nform the Council of staff action to close the Gunn, JL stanford and Jordan swim pools one day each weekend for the tiDal tbzae weekends of tbe summer awL. proqraa. Bo council action is require4. DisCUfSioll. stafr has baen closely &oDitorinq attendance and eperation costs at the three scbool swia pools which tbe City operat.es durlng the au.ater svia season --Guno High School, JL stanford and: Jordan Midd.le Schools. weekday swim lessons, recreational swim, City camp and other qroup swfa. keep the three pools reasonably busy Monday throuqh 7ri4ay during the aumaer period. Weekend recreati9nal swim has not been well attended at any of the three pools this year. School pool average daily attendance on saturd.ay andi sunday at the tUee pools, to date this summer, hilS been 3'~5 swimmers per day. On aany occasions, as few as tour to five swimmers have been in attendance at anyone time. The par day rental and staff coats to operate the three pools ranges :trom. $334 to $402 per day. At an average of $1.50 per svi .. er, daily fee revenues averaqe $5,~a5 per pool~ The RiDcona4a Pool weekend recreational svia proqram has continued at about the sams attendance level as in recent years. Bot weather and group picnics continue to be the major factors in Rinconada Pool attendance. A seccnd concern again this year bas been staff's inability to attract, recruit and hire qualified aquatics staff. Althougb City salaries are consistent with nearby municipa1ities, city pay schedules apparently do not compete well with the private sector. Also, tbe requireaents :for qettinq anc1 maintaining lifeguard certification makes other part-time jobs (e.q~ fast food restaurants) more attractive to many younq people. CKR:43.7:93 '.' ··flP· • paqe Two The on1y way staff can continue to operate all three scbool and Rinconada pools with current staff would be to sche~ule statf on a seven day-per-week basis. This :'.s Dot acceptable for an as.signment that requires viqi1ance in potential life-threatening situations. Overtime work is also a very expensive solutioD. ~s a result of the lov weeken4 attendance/revenue picture and staftinq concerns, staff has closed the three sehool pools, on an alternat.inq basis... tor one weelCend day during the final three weekends of th~ summer. Signs have :been posted at eaeh poo1, directing swimmers to the nearest open pool.
