BUDGET 93-94
On April 26, 1993 council approved a request for funding from the
Palo Alto centennial CO.m2!littee (CMR:260:33}. At that time the full
extent of staff participation with the Cen~ennial co~ittee in the
Centennial event .. as not known. Staff has noW' meet with the
centenniZlll 'Executive Director and the Chair of the Board of
Directors and gained an understandinq of the impAct on staff of the
p~anned activities of the Centennial committee.
staff originally estimated that the total dollar impact of t-he
committee request would be approximately $175,000. After workinq
carefully to document the cast of the requests from the Committee
and finalizinq the events vhere staff assistance was needed, it is
now confirmed that the cost still remains in the range criginally
requested for approval ($175,000) and stands at $151,000. That
amount includes fUnds tor the grant to the Commi~tee~ the loan ~f
a City staff person ~o the Centennial Committee, office space and
liability insurance. Also included is a s~t amount for postage and
printing ar~ the cost to incorporate a centennial theme into the
May Fete Parade. All of the items have received approva.l from
council, but i~ so~e instances a cost had not been estimated. A
complete outline of the activities and their cost is attached.

Staff recommends that the City asswne respon&.ibility for one
Centennial Birthday Celebration. At this time staft does not have
a: firm proposal in mind. I am requesting that Council authorjze
staft to stage a Palo Alto Birthday Celebration and that the cost
not exceed $28,OOO~ It appears appropriate that the City stage at
least one activity, in honor of such a milestone in the history o£
Palo Alto. I am therefore ~equestinq an authorization of a maximum
of $28,000 to plan and execute a birthday celebration.
