BUDGET 93-94
This report responds to thE Finance CO::l_l",ittee' s requF.':st for
further information regardi~g the funding applicaticn submitted
by the Second Hal-vest Food Bank for Ger.eral Fund support for
FY 1993-94, wnich w~s discussed at the May ~I 1993 Finance
com~ittee mezting.
The Second Harvest Food 3an}~ of Santa clara and Sali Mateo Coun
ties requested $5,800 to provide a brown bag food program for
t..argeted low-jncoYrle elderly i!ldividuals of Palo Alto. This
program is currerrtly providing services at the city-o".med Ventura
School site 2nd the City provides space free of charge. Tne
agency collE!cts surplus, non-!:larketable food and di.stributes it
to the hungry in both countie~. Over ]3 million po~nds of food
was provided last year in the two counties.
Operation Brown Bag, one of six progra~s offere~ ty the agency,
supplies weekly groceries to 11,000 very law-income sE~iors a~ 56
distribution sites. Pcojectio~5 for the current ~edr show 199
Palo Alto residents (an increase of 33% over the prior year) ~ill
be served by t.he Program at the Ventura. site. T· ... 'o-thirds of those
who participate in the progra~ are single pers'.Jn hea.d of !louse
holds. Clients served are 60~ and inco~e guidelines are belo~
$7'JD a month per individual and $95D ,-"cnthly for tw.:>.
The obje~tive of the Program includes s~rving weekly supplemental
groceries to 150+ residents in need. They utilize eight to ten
volunteers to distribute the pa~kages locally. Qualified seniors
are asked to pay a fee of $10 ann~ally.
