To celebrate the fifteenth armiversaql of t.l".e curbside re:cycling prograro. the landfill is planning a ccmpost giveaway. Tr..e compost will be available to Palo A1to residents only. This event is to reward oar residents fox their participation in and support cf the City composting program. ,e,ackqround In 1979, the City began co~posting the green veget~tive waste which was being buried at the landfilL The City recognized the importance of saving vall;able l.andfill space and combining green ~aste ~ith soil to produce a low cost topsoil. sin~e the program b-egan in 1979, it has receive1. several awards frolf! the. State and professiol'1al associations. visitors from across the United States and. from ot.her c'Juntri~s have observed the progre.ssive and innovative techniques used to process the green vaste into a high­ grade soil amendment on a large scale. Discussion Currently t.he landfill processes approximately 10/000 tons of coropostable materials yearly. This diversion from landfilling represents '7 perc€nf._ of the total \/'aste stream and, as 5'..lch, is a significant proportion of our leg-ally mandated reCJrcling goa 15. On two Saturdays, May 15 and ~ay 22, 1993, the landfill will offer (to Palo Alto residents) up to two yards of compost per vehicle until the 3 1 500 tons is gone. Palo Alto residents continue to support the City recycling programs, and steff believes this would be an opportunity to reward that support.
