Members of the council:
On March 22, 1993, the city Councii unanimously passed the
following r'totion: 1) Explore ¥.'hat role, if any, the City might
take in retaining or attracting a local dai:y new::;paperi 2)
Authorize a committee of t!'.e Council to pursue the matter and
direct the city Manager and her staff to assist as appropriate; 3)
Communicats with the Tribune company and any of the vario~s parties
woo have previously expre~sed int'?rest in purchase of the Peninsula
Times Tribune; 4) Ask the Council co:rnmittee and staff to return
with a preliminary report of their findings at the next scheduled
Council meeting; and 5) Actively pursue acquiring the Peninsula
Times Tribune archives.
'I'he Council Subcorrunittee and staff have conducted a number of
meetings and telephone con\~ersa:tions with various rr.embers of the
newspaper publishing industry, both local and nationwide, regarding
resurrection of the .e,::!_ninsula Times Tribu!",,~ ar, alternatively, the
institution of a local naily newspaper in Palo Alto. In
conjunction with conversatiarJs 'With the .9hica_gq--.Tni_mes Tribune,
Council Member Simitian has expressed t~e City's strong desire to
ga.in possession of the arcr,ival file:s of the Pel"'.in?_1,Ll_~ ___ n Times
T.UJ:;,.un~ for historical purposes. n:. is expected that a more
co::nplete report of the status ot" these discussioilS ca_n be made
'iolithin the next 30 days.
