THE HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL
Pa,lo Alto, California
Approval of Contract for Tree and §..turop BeItoval
Members of the ~ouncil:
Report in Brief
This report recommends that Council award a contract fo~ tree and
stump removal to Davey Tree Surgery in an amount not to exceed
$100,000. Funds have been budgeted in the Public Works Department
operations Division FY 1992-93 operating bUdget.
Bac);grou~
The Public works Department contracts 1'lnnually to remove dead,
dying and hazardous trees and stumps throughout the City. As a
result of the drought and the severe December 199Q freeze,
approximately 400 trees were removed in FY 1991-92. Staft
anticipates that this rate will continue through next spring4
Discussion
Bids were received from fou~ qualified contractors as shown on the
attached summary. The lowest responsible bid was determined on the
basis of removing 110 trees ~hich have initially been identified by
staff (see attached list) and on performing 100 crew hours of stump
grinding. Staff recommends that the bid of $27,666, submitted by
Davey Tree Surgery, be determined by Council to be the lOla'est
responsible bid and that the contract be awarded accordingly.
The contract allo~s for up to 290 additicnal trees to be removed,
if this is determined to be necessary as a result of further staff
investigation during the contract. The cost of the tree removals
will be in accordance with attached sch&dule A submitted by Davey
Tree Surgery as p~rt of their bid~ The total cost for all work
will not exceed the budget of $100,000.
Recommendation
staff recommends that Council approve and authorize the Mayor to
execute the attached contract with Davey Tree Surgery in an amount
not to exceed $100,000 for tree and stump removal.
