The c.urrent maximum allowable FAR for 8 commercial district is .4:1. The hotels in question already have a 5D% greater FAR, at .6:1. The traffic at nearby intersections are already congested. They are also heavily traveled by children going to Gunn High School, JLS, Juana Briones, lewish Community Center, oth •. , child-care and Nursery schools. These may pro,ide benefits for the community at w-ge but the resulting impacts aD fall h .. ,ily on ONE NEIGHBORHOOD. That would be fiUr if every neighborhood took its turn at bearing the impacts of th= projects that serve the general good. These construction efforts required, in turn, lots more parJeing, upgraded traffic channelS and the creation of lots of related service businesses. And Palo Alto residents have continued to hear that they have no choice but to allow these continiJed developments which are essentially in support of earlier developments. Thus recent successive City Councils apparently have come to see themselves not as protectors of the residents ""'ho elect them but chiefly 3S conduits for "compromise:f' being 'Worked out ov~r time between residential citizen.5 and large developerlinstitutional interests in the area. This is a prcx:ess that is inevitably and ever more rapidly lead:ing to the degradation of Palo Alto as a desirable residential com munity.
