"Clean ____ Bay Bus ines~
This is an info~ational report to advise Council that 135 Vehicle
service Facilities are receiving special recognition as Clean Bay
Businesses for their efforts to protect our creeks ann San
Francisco Bay.
Background
Faced with stringent new lilllits for discharge to the Bay, the
Regional Water Quality control Plant (RWQCP) has developed a seri~s
of new programs for facilities not previously regulated. Vehicle
Service Facilities (auto repair shops, body shops, gas stations,
ear washes, salvage yards and related businesses) were identified
as contributing sources and a new ordinance was adopted for these
facilities by the Piirtner cities early in :992. TO provide a
positive incentive for complyi~q with the ne.r ordinance, the "Clean
Bay Business Program" was developed as a companion program to the
new ordinance requirements. The 425 vehicle facilities in the
service area (East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain
View, Palo Alto and Stanford) were visited and given assistanc~ in
complying. Those businesses complying ahead of the October 1, 1992
ordinance deadline are being designated as Clean Bay Businesses.

It is anticipated that the number of Clean Bay Businesses wi 11 grow
as more and more facilities demonstrate full compliance with the
neW' ordinance.
Discus_§ion
In recognition of the Clean Bay Businesses efforts to keep our
creeks and San Francisco Bay clean, they are being given special
stickers for display windows (attached), patches for uniforms and
insignias for adver~isinq. Names of the bUsinesses will be listed
in local newspapers and in a number of public information docu-
