In 1946. the pcstwar building boem resulted in.a F.H.A. r.Jling requiring developers to provide a tree for every lot. ThiS added apprDximately 2.000 trEes per year to the City's streets as thE southern area of Pal~ Alto was developed. Developers chose fast-growing species to provide shade end protectio~ for the treeless areas. The creation of a new li~t of 30 approv~d t~ee species in 1950 brought t.he total number of different species that may be found on the City's streets today tD 142.
