The PUblic Art Commission has been e>:plo~ing the establishment of
an ordinance that would require private developers to proviae art
as a pQ.rt of development .. r;'h ... Comlnission r.as periodically repcrtad
to the Policy and Services Committee the status of their
investigation. At their July meeting, the Commission decided to
pursue a different approach for public art, -vhich would i:111ow for
voluntary contributions of public art from private developers.
At their meeting of December 3, 1991, the Policy and Services
Committee considered the PUblic Art Commission's request and staff
recommendation to conduct a nexus study -vi th respect to
establishing an ordinance that would require a percent for art from
private developers. 1'he COI:l::nittee asked staff to research and to
retul."n to the policy and Ser. ... ices Committee va~ious percent for art
ordinance alternatives 'Wi tr_ a recommendation from the Pub I ic Art
Commission. The Commission returned to the Policy and Servi-=es
Committee May 5, 1992 with a report thac outlined several
alternatives, including a VOluntary program. Even though the
Public Art commission indicated to the policy and SeLvices
Committee their intent to continue ~ith producing a ~exu5 study.

the Co~~ission voted unanimously to abandon that approach and to

CONCLUSION
Within the next 6 months, the Public Art Comntission will return to
the Policy and Services Committee ~ith a draft ordinance that sets
forth 9uidelines with respect to vcluntary contributions.
