This report is to fellow up on activities related to recycling for Stanford Research Park (SRP) Dusinesses~ Background On March 17, 1992, staff mEt 'idth the policy and Services committee to address recycling issues r~i5sd by the Stanford Research Park Forum of the Chamber of Co~rnerce {CK~:184:92). Council encouraged staff to work 'With a subcommittee of the Forum in order to determine recycling options for the SRP~ and to return to Policy and Services committee in six :months 'With a status report on recyclinq in the SR? Discussipn since the Policy and Services meeting, the follm..'ing activities have taken place: staff has had two meetings wi th the Stanford Research Park Forum to develop an action plan on ho"" to enhance recycl ing activity at the SRP. The outcome of the meetings was ~ity staff stated that they 'Would aevelop a SlJrvey to send to SRP businesses to find 01.!t the current level of recycling in place in the SRP. and whether or not businesses would be ~illing to commit their recyclables to a city provided collection system (Attachment A). Staff offered to hold workshops for SRP businesses to explain the City'S current recycling system and to deter-mine businesses r recycling needs. One of the issues that came up at one of the meetings ~as the fact that the size of busil1esses in the SRP varied ~idely and no matter 'What system was developed, it , ... ould have to be able to handle businesses of all sizes. St.aff stated "t'_hat the City 'Would run a pilot recycling program in the SRP to address the issue and to determine what, if any. probleT':ls would surface froIn the different types and sizes of facilities. T1o.'Q pilot programs were developed~ -1- CMR:424:92 • , • o one with Lockheed, a large company with separa~e buildings in ~hich collection will be coordinated by buil~inq staff, and the other is a ~ulti-tenant building in which each small business has their own custodial service with one cantral garbage area~ Eighty SRP businesses were sent a letter inviting them to the two workshops along with the. survey and a self~8ddressed stamped envelope. To date, 45 responses have been received. Attachwent A is the survey mailed to the businesses, and il.ttachrnent B is a summary of the ~esponses to the SU~y€y. The two workshops held were hos~ed by SRP businesses. The first was on July 22, 1992 at Xerox and the second en ~ugust 19, 1992 at Watkins-Johnson. At the first 'Workshop, only three business representatives attended. However, at the second meeting, 24 business representatives. attended. Information on City-offered. programs was distributed to participants, as ~ell as discussion of potential future plans. Feedback from the 'Workshop£>. has been positive .. conclusioD staff is examining the feasibility of establishing a regular collection rQute offering weekly collection of up to six materials fro~ businesses in the SRP. Prior to establishing a new program, staff is working with PASCO to determine if additional services can be provided to SRP without additional resources. The information provided by the survey has a~sisted staff in determining ~hat additional programs would be necessary to improve commercial/industrial recycling servic9s in the park.
