Status Report on the ___ Alma/XearIow 'Railroad: Crossing~ __ -;:ide:lt
Members of the Cou~cil:
As you know, a tragic accident occurred at the railroad ~rossing at
Alma/Meadow on Wednesday. November 6, 1991. This report will bring
you up-tO-date on the safety improvement program alread:i~ l .. mder'"ulY
at that location~
We reported in september 1991 that a three phase program was in
place to improve the intersection~ SincE September, COUncil has
awarded the contract far-Pi"'.ase II, and that work should be
completed by mid-December. This .... ill complete all intersection
improvements under City j~risdiction.
As we reported in September, funding aVailable to Southern Pacific
is now reduced; and there will be a delay in Phase III completion.
The Public Utilities commission continues to disallo~ the
installation of pedestrian gates, although .e are in the process of
appealing that decision.
We recognize that young school children using this crossing will do
so with considerable emotion, as they travel to and from school for
the next few weeks. T~ provide them ~ith Eome measure of comfort,
police personnel have bee.f'l as.5igned to that location dur ing morning
and afternoon school travel. We hope this ... i 11 help school
children deal ~ith the situation a bit more easily.
If there are additional developments between this ~iting and the
Council meeting, I will report them to you orally.
