HomeMy WebLinkAbout0378.092A.'LlgUSt 6, ::.992 The Honorable City Council P~l~ Alto, California Software UpqraCle -or th~j~Jepbene system Membe~s of the Council: Report in Brief 6 The purpose of this report i~ to request council approval of the NEC contract to upgrade ~he software in the remote telephone system at the Municipal Service Center~ The funding is available in the FY1992-93 Enterprise Capital Improvement :Project, #9353. lIackground Tile n£e Private Autonatic Branch Exchange (PABX) S.,it.ch. located at. the Mt.micipal Service Center (MS~}, provides a bypass of Pacific: Bellis Central Office lin~5 at the MSC and the Utilities Control Center for a savings of apprcxi~ately $40,000 per year~ Plans are underway to include the facilities of the water Quality Control Plant and Animal Services Oivision to the bypass arrangement for an additional savings of approximately $12,000 per year. Discussion The te~ephone key system at the Water Quality Control plant is at capacity with 16 telephone lines and 48 telephone sets. Additional lin,es are needed as the Plant responds to various requirements mandated by federal and state regulations~ The plan is to upgrade the tel~phone system vith a switch like the one at the ~sc and !ink the two together. However, a new s'.itch to serv~ce the WQCP and Animal Service can only be purchased with the late,::.;t software. The switch at the MSC is six years old and does not have the latest software. The two switches would not be compatible unless the MSC switch is upgraded. The Single Interface Module software on the switch at the MSC must be upgraded to provide adequate capacity to expand I add networKing capabilities and maintain the cuzrent PABX s.-itch. NEe is considered the sole source provider for this service as determined under PAMe Section 2.30.140 (2) I because che City has standardized telephone connections through the NEe phone syst~m and other software is not compatible.
