watering Program fO,r Drought-Stressed Trees

Report in Brief
This informational report $~mmarizes a program for deep waterinq of
dro~qht-5tressed trees in areas where side~alks have beer. replaced
from 1966 to the present. Council action is not required.
Discussion
Five years of drought, in combination with ~aterin9 restrictions,
have c~useo stress on City trees. The most stress occurs to trees
adjacent to sidewalk replacement projects4 The city has
h'lple:mented a program to .. ·"'ter City street trees in areas where
side~alks ~ere replaced fro~ 1986 to present. R~claimed water and
existing City equipment are used.
The Tree Section waters young trees in the business districts of
the City until 11:00 a.m. each d·'3Y. When. that shift ends I an
equipment operator utilizes a 300-gallon hydraulic unit to deep
water the root systems of stressed trees. A total of 194 trees are
being watered in the follo~ing arEas:
1. Churchill Ave~ue to sequoia Avenue, El Camino Real to Mariposa
Avenue;
2. 9re-gon ExpressW'ay to Erebarcadero Road, Middlefield Road to
Alma Street;
3. Embarcadero Road. 'forest Aver.ue. A1m"l Street, and Middlefield
Road; and
4. Forest Avenue and Palo Alto Avenue, and Alma Street to
~iddlefield Road.
