Council action is not required. i5ackground On March 28, 1988, staff provided Council with ar. informational report regarding the condition of £1 Palo Alto (CMR:207:S). The report outlined a ~ork plan recommended by S.P. McClenahan Tree Service and stated that staff would provide Council with periodic updates on the condition of the tree. Following is the work cOlI',pleted this year and an evaluation of the health of El Palo Alto~ In June 1991, an inspection of El Palo Alto was performed by S.P. McClenahan Tree Service~ soundings ~ere taken at various heights to determine structural integrity. The slight lean of El Palo Alto has not changed since the slJrvey of 1938. Approx-i!!1ately 10 feet of dead trea top was remcved, and the cut sealed with shellac. The aerial sprinkler was adjusted to the new height. Aerial termites yere observed in the top 3 feet of the dead lO-foot section. The termite activity is not considered a threat to tree health. Foliar samples taken at three heights indicate a decline of .foliage at 80 feet on the weathered side and increased vigor throughout the remaining canopy. TWig elongation during the current grc'-"ing season and last year indicate dramatic increase in overall vigor (twice the average over the previolls five years). The pres~nt height of the tree is 110 feet 8 inches. In general, the program and aerial misting has preservation measures CMR: 38':91 of fertilizing, mulching, ground watering, prolonged the life of El Palo Altai and will continue.
