On March 28, 1988, staff provided Council with ar. informational
report regarding the condition of £1 Palo Alto (CMR:207:S). The
report outlined a ~ork plan recommended by S.P. McClenahan Tree
Service and stated that staff would provide Council with periodic
updates on the condition of the tree. Following is the work
cOlI',pleted this year and an evaluation of the health of El Palo
Alto~
In June 1991, an inspection of El Palo Alto was performed by S.P.
McClenahan Tree Service~ soundings ~ere taken at various heights
to determine structural integrity. The slight lean of El Palo Alto
has not changed since the slJrvey of 1938. Approx-i!!1ately 10 feet of
dead trea top was remcved, and the cut sealed with shellac. The
aerial sprinkler was adjusted to the new height. Aerial termites
yere observed in the top 3 feet of the dead lO-foot section. The
termite activity is not considered a threat to tree health.
Foliar samples taken at three heights indicate a decline of .foliage
at 80 feet on the weathered side and increased vigor throughout the
remaining canopy. TWig elongation during the current grc'-"ing
season and last year indicate dramatic increase in overall vigor
(twice the average over the previolls five years). The pres~nt
height of the tree is 110 feet 8 inches.
In general, the program
and aerial misting has
