HOtlORABLE CITY COUNCIL
Palo Alto, California
llinford Medical Center f.KP_~ns;Qn Projects
Members of t~e Council:
REPORT IN BRI,F
This is an informational report and no Council action is required. The
purpose of this r-eport is to inform the City Council of the StCltU5 cind' nature
of twa projects, a parking garage an~ medical outpatient clinic, proposed
.. lthin the Stanford Medical Center (see-location map). prel iminary re'oliews by
the Architectural Review Board have been cempleted, and use permit
applications have been received for both projects.
Tht parking structure is i three-le'olel structure providing parki~g for
approximately aoo cars. The parking structure will be built on an existing
surface parking lot located west of the main hospital. The structure will
fotave i maximum t1eight of 18 feet, with the exception of two 30-foot elevator
towers. The medical cutpatient clinic is a 73~OOO-square-foot. three-stot'Y
building proposed on a surface parking lot located south of the 851 Welch Road
site. The project will includl2 a full basemel1t and magnetic resonance
imaging facil1ty~ and t1a~e a maximum height of 50 feet.
Neitner of the projects present major policy or land use issues. However,
staff ~lshed to lnforrn the Council about these two projects because they are
two relatively large projects proposed at the same tirtle~ and because 'lilith
these projects the MedicaJ Center will be ~built-out.r includi~g the floor
area allowed' under the recent rezoning of the 851 'J/elch Road Parcel approved
by tne Council 1 ast summer. The parking structure has been proposed for some
time and is an important ele~ent of the medical center parking plan. Though
the medical outpatient clinic is larger tnan originally described at the time
of the eSI Welch Road zone change (2S,OOO sq. ft. vs. 73,000 sq.ft.), the
proposed sile, scale and location of the building is considered compatible
with surrounding development and is proposed an a site better able to handle
increased square footage than other 1ocations in the medical ce~ter.
