Members of the Council:
R.eport in Brief
The purpose of this report is to transmit to the city Council the
planning efforts and scheduled activities of the City 1 s Centennial
Celebration to be held in 1993-94. No Council action is required.
The Palo Al to Centennial 1994 I Inc~ not-for··profit corporation has
been established by private citizens appointed by the City Council
to plan the Centennial Celebration. Six new members of the
Centennial Board of Directors were recently appointed by the City
Council. The Board of Directors ha'S adopted a schedule of
"official" Centennial events: and planning has begun on
fundraising, community outreach, education, public relations;
products, and a permanent gift; as well as the. special events
themselves. The attached schedule of events and reports ..... ill give
the members of the Council a picture of the type of events and
activities being planned.
The Board o~ Directors is presently considering options for
staffing the Centennial Celebration. Unresclved as yet is the
issue of paid centennial staff versus contract staff and the amount
of money required to provide staff. In any case, employees or
contractors of the Board will be agents of the Board and not of the
City of Palo Al to. The Board has discussed coming forward during
the City Council budget review process 'With proposals regarding the
operation of the centennial Celebration and requesting funding for
those proposals. The Board of Directors expects to cover all costs
of the Centennial Celebration through futUre fundrdising and
prod:.lct sales.

Comment.s
Members of the City Council may want to question Board Members or
give input to the Board regarding specific plans or general
directions being taken by the Board~ No funds are being requested
for Centennial Celebration planning at this time. It is
anticipated that the Board of Directors .... i11 return to th~ city
Council .... ith progress reports on a re~ular basis through t.he end of
1994 and the Centennial Celebration.
