Agreements for Recreation Prqgrams and t'he USI! of Pale Alto unified
SChool District Facilities

Report in Brief
This report requests Council approval of recreation program
contracts whiCh are revenue producing and generate approximately a
30 percent profit to the City. The contractors have been loI"ith tl1e
City of Palo Alto for a number of years, and the programs continue
to expand as participation continues to increase. Approval is also
requested of the annual Palo Alto Unified school District contra~t
for use of school facilities to conduct recreation prog-r2ll!l1.s.
Background
The Recreation Division utilizes a T1uTI'lber of contractors who
provide a variety of services and programs for the cornmunitY4 Fees
for these programs are reviewed ana approved by the City Council.
Should registration for any of these programs fall short of the
minimum required enrollment, the activity will be canceled. Any
fee collected for canceled activities ~ill be returned to
registrants; with no payment to the contr~ctor. Those contracts
which require Council approval are listed belo~:
1. Art David -$3D,OOC -Palo Alto Umpires Association
Art Oavid schedules all the umpires and official.; for-the
Adult Softball and Basketball Leagues that play year-rocnd.
Team registration fees cover the costs of the officials and
umpir~s. During the year, 171 teams register to play in City
leagues.
2. John Whitlinqer -$26,500 -John Whitlinger Tennis

3. Palo Alto Unified School District -$25,100 -Facility Rental
This agreement provides for t.he rental of facil i ties to
conduct recreation programs. The Recreation Division uses
Palo Alto Unified School District facilities year-round for
programs "Which include }routh arJd adult sports, gym programs
and special classes. They provide rental of the Gunn and
J.L.Stanford pools for summer programs, gyrnnasi~ms at
J.L.St~nford, Palo Alto and Gunn for youth and adult sport5~
and classroom space at Nixon School for school-year camp
programs ..
Recommergiat ion
Staff reco!!\l'nends that Council approve and authoriz,e the Mayor to
execute the attached agreements to provide revenue-prod~cing
recreation programs on a contract basis and for the use of Palo
Alto Unified School District facilities for recreation programs.
