THE HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL
Palo Alto~ California
Greer Park pevelopment Project, ClP 18805 -Hydrose~ing
Members of the council:
Report in Brief
This is an informational report
will take place as part of
Development.
Background
concerninq the hydroseeding Which
the third phase of Greer Park
council approved a constnlction contract on July 23.. 1990 for
developing approximately 12 acres of Greer Park (CMR:40~:O). The
landscaping portion of the contract includes hydroseeding the
topsoil and installing a new reclaimed yater irrigation system .
.t!.iAcussion
The contractor has completed placing topsoil in the park. After
the sand bedding is installed in the soccer field areas over the
next three weeks, 11 acres ot the site ~ill be hydroseeded. Staff
is acutely aware of tha ~ater shortage and therefore is striving to
finish hydroseeding quickly in o~der to take advantage of any
rainfall for seed germination. After the grass is fully
established within two to four months, it will be irriqated ~ith a
blend of 50 percent reclaimed and 50 percent potable water. Signs
will be placed at the site notifying the public that reclaimed
water is beinq used for irrigation prior to the park opening in
eprinq.
It is i_portent that hydroseedinq not be delayed until after the
rainy season, and that it take place during the winter when the
soil is cooler and less evaporative. These conditions will not
exist in the late spring and su~er months, which ~ill result in

the need to use more water to establish the grass. Also, vaitinq
until spring will delay the park opening until fall 1991. This
would make it extremely difficult to p~otect the site from foot
traftic, as the adjacent established p~~k would be in heavy use.
Respectfully submitted,
