The City Council of the City of Pa.lo Alto
do ordain as follows:
Section 16 of Article V of Part III of
the Codified Ordinances of the City <>:f Palo Alto
is hereby am.ended ~o read as follows:
" "Sec. 16;,: GAMBLING UNLAWFUL: It shall be
unlawful :for a.ny person to deal, play, carry: on,
open, conduct or cause to be opened or c ondu;5ted, es owner or employe' ~·1hether for hire or not'
or to play at or bet a:t or against any game 1:>:f
bi 11.iards 01• poC!l, or any other ~me pl~yed with
dice, cards or 6ther device, for money,.chip~ •
checks, credits, drinks or other representat:lve
of value. It &hall be unlawful for ant peri~on
to act as lookou:t, doorkeeper or. gamekeeper for
any such game played for money, checks, ch1JH~,
credits, drinks or any representative of valtte.
Any building, room, lot or other place used cir
occupied for the.: purpose of gambling or play j~ng
or carrying on of arJY of the r.ames herein
prohibited :for money, checks, credits,. drinks1,
or other representative of value shall be dee1med
e disorderly house: and it shall be u:iilawful for
any person to resort to, enter or be in, any
room or place whore a.ny such p;a.me is be:i.ng pl~ayed.
Provided, however, that the playin~ of cards for
checks as the renta7: value of tables to be
received in merchandise at the place of busin~ss
where games are played shall not be deemed e.

Any violation of the above ordinance shall
be deemed a misdemeanor, punishable as provid·ed
in the penalty of the Codified Ordinances.

passed at a mee~inp. of the council of the City of
Palo Alto held on the llth day of August, 192~b.
