ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OP·THE CITY OF PALO ALTO . .-
AMENDING VARIOUS PORTIONS OF CHAPTER 16.20 {SIGNS)
OF THE PALO ALTO MUNICIPAL CODE TO REDUCE THE SIZE
OF CERTAIN SIGNS BY ONE-THIRD
The Council of the City of Palo Alto does ORDAIN as fol-
SECTIO~ 1. Section 16.20.120(d) of the Palo Alto Municipal
Code hereby is amended to read as follows:
"(d) Size and heish~. Except as other
wise providea in Sectlon 16,20~190 1 wall signs
in residential districts shall not exceed an
area of one square foot of sign for each forty
square feet of wall area or one hundred square
feet, whichever is less. Freestanding signs
shall meet the requirements of Table 1."
SECTION 2. Section 16$20~170(a) 1~ of the Palo Alto Municipal
Code hereby is amended to read as follows:
11 L Area. No such sign shall exceed
twenty-sevensquare feet in a.rea.,"
SECTION 3. Section 16.20.170(b) 1. of the Palo Alto Municipal
Code hereby is amended to read as .follows;
11 L Area. No such sign shall exceed
three square-!eet in area."
SECTION 4 ~-Subsection (d). hereby is added to Section
16.20.230 of the Palo Alto Municipal Code to read as follows:
11 (d) Signs rendered nonconf~rming due
to the general one-third size reduction
amendments to Chapter 16.20 of 1974 and
legally erected pursuant,to a valid sign·
permit issued within the two.years immed
iately preceding October 11, 1974:
11 (1) Signs painted on buildings, walls,
.or fences--three years from permit date or
two years from October 11, 1974, whichever
period is greater.
"(2) All other signs--seven years
from permit date."

SECTION 5. Section 16.20.320 hereby is added to the Palo
Alto Municipal Code to read as follows:
"16.20.320 Tables 1, 2, and3 of this
chapter are hei'eby amended to reduce the
allowable sign area in each such table by
33.33%, rounded to th~ nearest square foot,
from and after October 11, 1974."
SECTION 6. None of the provisions of this oxdinance will
have a significant adverse environmental impact.
SECTION 7. This ordinance shall become effective upon
the expiration of thirty (30) days from its passage.

16.20.230 of the Palo Alto Municipal Code to read as follows:
"(d) Exemption: No amortization period is
~equired for any sign rendered nonconfqrming on
or after september 26, 1974, due solely to a reduction
of the allowable maximum area for such sign."
SECTION 5. Section 16 .. 20.320 hereby is added to the Palo
