HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-01-16 Public Art Commission Summary Minutes IS POSTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 54954.2(a) OR SECTION 54956 PUBLIC ART COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, January 16, 2025 Community Meeting Room & Virtual 7:00 p.m. Commissioners Participating: Ben Miyaji, Hsinya Shen, Tara de la Garza, Harriet Stern, Amber Smith joined at 7:03 pm Commissioners Absent: Loren Gordon, Lisa Waltuch City Council Participating: None Staff Present: Elise DeMarzo, Public Art Program Director, CSD Amanda Deml, Assistant Director, CSD Nadya Chuprina, Public Art Program Coordinator, CSD CALL TO ORDER – Vice Chair Shen called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. AGENDA CHANGES, REQUESTS, DELETIONS – None. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS – None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES – December 19, 2024 PAC Regular Meeting Minutes: Moved by Commissioner Miyaji, Second by Commissioner de la Garza. All in Favor. STAFF COMMENTS –Staff provided an update on two open calls for artists: for the pre-qualified artist roster and muralist roster with application deadline of January 27, 2025. Staff also made announcement about the ongoing recruitment for the City’s Architectural Review Board, Utilities Advisory Commission, and Human Resources Commission. NON-ACTION: 1. Projection Mapping Presentation – Staff provided an overview of the projection mapping project as part of the Code:ART 2025 interactive media festival, to be displayed at the façade of City Hall nightly Oct 16-25. Staff has contracted a San Francisco-based production company, A3 Immersive to produce the original creative content and implement the projections for the festival. Production team of Sean Mason and Alexander Schöpff joined the meeting remotely and made an information presentation about projection mapping technology and production process, and economic impacts of light festivals with examples from Let’s Glow SF and Lighted Napa festivals. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about artists qualifications and the selection process, creative content in relation to Palo Alto and the theme of Code:ART, and types of products used for building wrapping. 2. King Artist-in-Residence Presentation – Staff provided an overview of the ongoing King AIR project led by artist Alma Landeta. Landeta joined the meeting remotely to present their residency project and final report, highlighting its goals and research methodology, stakeholders and partner organizations, community engagement process and findings, and emerging themes, which have informed a concept for Landeta’s future temporary artwork. The artist is currently working on their conceptual design for the artwork in consultation with staff and art fabricators. The artwork conceptual design will be presented to the PAC for their approval at a future meeting prior to its fabrication and installation at King Plaza in front of City Hall.
