HomeMy WebLinkAboutORD 2690... • ,_ ORDINANCE NO. 2690 ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO ADDING SECTIONS 10.04.045 AND 10.08.025 TO 1rHE PALO ALTO MUNICIPAL CODE ESTABLISHING THE POSITION OF A COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER 1\ND DEPINING HIS DUTIES The Council of the City of Palo Alto does ORDAIN as follows: SECTION 1. Section 10.04.045 is added to the Palo Alto Municipal Code to read: 11 10.04.045 Community service officer. '!'he term 1 corrirtn.mi ty service officer 1 means a special police .. --,fficer of the city authorized to enforce all laws of the city and of the state applicable to bicycles and bicyclists -~rtd to enforce all traffic laws of the city and of· t:i1t:/state applfcable to traffic within bicycle lanes and bicycle paths." SECTION 2. Section lo.oe.n2s is added to th~ Palo Alto Municipal Code to read: "10.08.025 Conununitt service officers. {a) Each conununity Bervice of ic~r shall be appointed by the city manager an<l shall be issued a badge plainly designating his office. He shall be sworn in as a special police officer of the city and may operate' authorized emergency vehicles of the police depart­ ment of the city; provided, however, that a community setVice officer shall not be deemed otherwise to be a n\~mber·of the police department of the city. (b) Each cc-'TIRtuni ty servic·e officer shall keep his badge in his possession and shall wear an insignia plainly designating his office while engaged in the discharge of his duties. · · (c) Each community service officer hereby is charged with the duty of enforcing all laws of the city and of the state applicable to bicycles and bicyclists .:md to enforce all ·traffic laws of the city and of the state applicable to traffi9 within bicycle lanes and bicycle paths. · (d) It shall b~ unlawful for any person to resist or interfere with .a community service officer in the disch~rge of his duties." SECTION 3. This ordiriknce shall become effective upon the '1 ,_ .. ~ - ._/ . .... • ·-· upon the expiration of thirty days from its passage.
