ORDINANCE NO. 2611
ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
AMENDING CERTAIN SECTIONS OF THE PALO ALTO MUNICIPAL
CODE TO ESTABLISH A DEPARTMENT OF UTILITIES UNDER THE
DIRECTION OF A MANAGING DIRECTOR AND SETTING FORTH
HIS-DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES THEREIN

WHEREAS, as a part of managerial reorganization, certain titles,
duties and responsibilities are being changed; and
WHEREAS, no other substantive changes are being made to the
uniform building code or.the uniform electrical cod~.

(4) He shall operate such equipment as is necessary
for the fulfillment of his function.
(5) He shall keep and maintain such maps and records
as are necessary for the fulfillment of his function.
(6) He·ahall cooperate and coordinate his efforts
with the fire department for the installation,· repair,
and maintenance of a water system adequate for the
needs of the fire department.
(7) He shall be responsible for all customer service
functions of the water, gas, sewer and electric utilities.
(8) · He shall install and maintain as directed the
electrical traffic control devices and street lighting
system of the city •.
(9) He shall perform such other duties as may be required

SECTION J. Section 2.08.270 of the Palo Alto Munit;Ypal Code is
deleted;
SECTION 4. SE"ctiori 2.08.310 of the Pa.l.o Alto Municipal Code is
amended as to sub·dection (8),, subsection (9) is deleted and subsections

SECTION.6. Items (1) through (4) of Subsection (a) of
Section 12.16.050 are amended to read:
"12.16.050 Excettions. (a) ~he provisions of this
chapter shall no apply to the following types of
facilities.
(1) Poles used exclusively for police and fire alarm
boxes, traffic control facilities, or any similar muni
cipal equipment installed under the supervision and to
the satisfaction of the managing director of uti.lities,
or his designee.
(2) Poles used exclusively for street lighting.
(3) · An electric distribution or transmission system in
exc·ess of fifteen kilovolts unless the managing director
of utilities, or his designee, determines that under
ground installation of.such transmission system·is
fe.asible and practicable. His decision in such matters
shall be finaL .
. ( 4) -. When a!;thorized by the managing director of utili tes, or his designee, poles and overhead lines -s.nd associated
overhead structures crossing or entering any portion. of

SECTION 16. Subsection B. of Section 16.32.030 of the Palo
Alto Municipal Coda is amended to read:
11 B. DEPOSIT. Before the issuance of a pern{it he.re
under, the applicant shall deposit with the bui~ding
official the minimum sum of five hundred dollars.plus
a·sum to be determined by the building official to be
sufficient to pay the cost of service rendered by city
employees in_ protecting, trimming or cutting trees·along
the route of moving, in safeguarding, removing and
restoring wires, poles or equipment of the department
of utilities of the city of Palo Alto, in rendering
. inspection services necessary·. to protect th~ interest

in a safe and sanitary condition."
SECTION 17. Subsection o. of Section 16.32.040 of the Palo Alto
Municipal Code is ameftded to read:
