City/Schools Liaison Committee
Supplemental Report
From: Todd Collins and Pat Burt
Meeting Date: December 14, 2023
Item Number: D
TITLE
City-Schools Collaborations Memo – Report out from the Subcommittee related to the
Collaborations between the City and PAUSD
SUBJECT: City/School Strategic Collaborations
Throughout their history, PAUSD and the City have developed a range of programs and services
to serve the needs of Palo Alto youth and families. Many of those efforts have been coordinated
between the agencies while others have been performed independently. Despite the many
existing programs, the relationship has been more piecemeal than coordinated in recent
decades. A more strategic approach would likely benefit both bodies, as well as serving better
the youth and families of our community.
After reviewing models of master city/school collaboration we recommend that, rather than
working toward a master agreement, we should develop a master list of existing programs
where we currently collaborate or coordinate, or that present synergies between the bodies.
This master list can serve to review those areas more strategically to leverage resources or to
identify additional unmet needs so that we can better explore how to work together to meet
those needs. In addition, this framework can serve discussions with Stanford University, Los
Altos Hills, and private schools in Palo Alto to better collaborate on youth needs in Palo Alto or
PAUSD.
If the City/School Liaison Committee agrees with this approach, the Committee can recommend
adoption of the framework to their respective bodies.
