COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WEEK
November 12 – 18, 2025
WHEREAS, community foundations are grantmaking public charities dedicated to improving the lives of people
in a defined local geographic area; and
WHEREAS, since the establishment of the first community foundation in 1914, these organizations have played
a critical role in identifying and addressing community needs through strategic philanthropy; and
WHEREAS, Community Foundation Week, created in 1989 by former President George H.W. Bush, recognizes
the important work of community foundations throughout America and their collaborative and innovative approach to
working with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors; and
WHEREAS, community foundations in California, including Palo Alto Community Fund, which serves and is
supported by the people in the City of Palo Alto, have been instrumental in mobilizing resources, fostering partnerships,
and supporting initiatives that address critical issues such as education, health care, housing, and economic
development; and
WHEREAS, these foundations have demonstrated leadership and commitment to the betterment of our
communities, especially during times of crisis and recovery; and
WHEREAS, recognizing Community Foundation Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate
the contributions of these organizations and to raise awareness about the importance of philanthropy in our society.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Ed Lauing, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, do hereby recognize the week of November
12–18, 2025, as Community Foundation Week in Palo Alto, and encourage all residents to support and learn more
about the impactful work of community foundations in our region.
