Proclamation Recognizing National Public Works Week
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council proclaim the week of May 19-25, 2024, as National
Public Works Week in the City of Palo Alto.

NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK, MAY 19-25, 2024
WHEREAS, Public Works services provided in Palo Alto are an integral part of our citizens' everyday lives; and
WHEREAS, the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the efficient implementation and
operation of public works systems and programs such as streets, public buildings, storm drains, urban forestry, wastewater treatment, solid waste collection, environmental and sustainability programs, and airport management and operations; and
WHEREAS, the health, safety, and comfort of Palo Alto greatly depends on these facilities and services; and
WHEREAS, the quality and effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning, design, construction, and maintenance are vitally dependent upon the efforts and skill of Public Works staff; and
WHEREAS, Palo Alto's Public Works Department was the first such department in Silicon Valley to achieve accreditation by the American Public Works Association in 2015, and in 2024 was granted reaccreditation, recognizing its compliance with best management practices and commitment to continuous improvement. and
WHEREAS, the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated personnel who staff the Public Works Department is influenced by the community's attitude and understanding of the importance of the work they perform.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Greer Stone, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim the week of May 19, 2024 as "National Public Works Week" in the City of Palo Alto, and I call upon all citizens and civic organizations to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing our public works and to recognize the contributions which Public Works staff make every day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.
