SUBJECT:CELLULAR TELEPHONES PROVIDED TO PUBLIC JUNIOR
AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS
This is an information report and no Council action is required.
DISCUSSION
During the summer of 1999, the State Attorney General announced that local law enforcement
agencies could obtain, at no charge, cellular telephones for use on public high school campuses.
The program was developed in response to recent tragedies that have occurred on school
campuses across the country. Local police agencies were asked to submit a request to the state
ola official letterhead.
After consultation with representatives of the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD), the
Police Department submitted a request for the cellular telephones. On February 18, 2000, 60
telephones will be turned over to PAUSD to be used on its junior and high school campuses.
Telephone placement and utilization will be left to the discretion of the PAUSD. The majority
will be distributed throughout the campuses.’ The telephones have been programmed to dial
only 9-1-1, or the seven digit City of Palo Alto emergency telephone number. Pacific Bell
Wireless donated the telephones to the state.
