HomeMy WebLinkAboutStaff Report 3890 City of Palo Alto (ID # 3890) City Council Staff Report Report Type: Special Orders of the Day Meeting Date: 6/17/2013 City of Palo Alto Page 1 Summary Title: Resolution for Curtis Williams Title: Resolution of the Council Expressing Appreciation to Curtis Williams Upon his Retirement From: City Manager Lead Department: Planning and Community Environment Attachments:  Curtis Williams (DOC) RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO CURTIS WILLIAMS UPON HIS RETIREMENT WHEREAS, Curtis Williams served the residents of Palo Alto as Director of Planning & Community Environment for 4 years and as Assistant Director for 3 years prior to being Director; and WHEREAS, prior to being hired as an official City employee, Curtis was a consultant to the City of Palo Alto working on the Zoning Ordinance Update and other projects for 6 years; and WHEREAS, prior to working for the City of Palo Alto, Curtis had also served as Planning Director in the Town of Woodside and the Town of Los Altos Hills, the City of Austin, City of Rancho Palos Verdes, and the State Coastal Commission in other planning capacities; and WHEREAS, while Curtis guided the Department through various economic conditions, including the construction boom of the mid-2000s, the Great Recession and the recent economic recovery; and WHEREAS, as the Department Director, Curtis directed significant community projects in Palo Alto, including the Eden Family Housing project, Tree House project, Alma Plaza, Palo Alto Bowl site redevelopment, Lytton Plaza and Heritage Park improvements, the first Green Building Ordinance, Mings Hotel, Elks Lodge, Lockheed Martin, Palo Alto Mosque, amongst others; and WHEREAS, Curtis directed several other significant projects such as the Palo Alto Commons Annex, College Terrace, Edgewood Shopping Center; Art Center, Main Library, Mitchell Park Library, Golf Course Redesign, Flood Protection/JPA; commercial properties on Stanford University Medical Center renewal and replacement projects; Hilton Garden Inn, 3000 Hanover HP, Park Plaza, Apple stores at University and Stanford Shopping Center, Varian Campus, VMWare Campus, PacificArt League, and the AT&T DAS; Ronald McDonald House Expansion, and several other commercial property projects like Bloomingdales and other Stanford Shopping Center storefronts, Roth building, the Varsity improvements, 780 Welch Road; Gideon Hausner Campus project, Housing Element and ABAG/RHNA project, Development Center Blueprint Initiative, High Speed Rail and the Rail Corridor project; and WHEREAS, Curtis performed all of the aforementioned tasks in a calm, diplomatic and approachable manner, always seeking consensus and ensuring the greater good was always at the forefront of each discussion. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby recognizes Curtis Williams, a professional planner, mentor and great role model of all aspiring planners, Planning Directors and public sector employees, for his seven years of public service and contributions to the City of Palo Alto.
