Recommendation
Staff recommends that Council receive the 3-year Information Technology (IT) Strategy
presentation and offer comments and questions.
Executive Summary
The mission of the City’s Information Technology Department is to provide innovative
technology solutions that support City departments in delivering quality services to the
community. In the long-term, the vision of technology for the City is to build a leading
digital city. The following are the strategic goals that align to the vision and mission:
1. Deploy digital city capabilities
2. Implement IT governance
3. Standardize and enhance service delivery
4. Upgrade technology infrastructure and formalize Information Security
With this new strategy, IT expects to lower costs, increase quality and efficiency and
provide greater service innovation. The strategy will also enable the City of Palo Alto to
become the next digital city.
Background
The following presentation outlines the City’s 3-year IT strategy. The IT strategy

focuses on lowering overall technology costs, higher quality services, greater use of
innovative solutions, and improved efficiency.
Discussion
The IT department will present highlights of the current technology landscape, our new
City IT strategy which kicked off on July 1, 2012, what IT has accomplished since the
launch of the strategy, and the plan for how the strategy will be further executed in the
future.
