PROCLAMATION
National Arbor Day and California Arbor Day
WHEREAS, the urban forest of Palo Alto is inseparable from quality of life, walk-
ability, bike-ability, learning environment, and human health; and
WHEREAS, the urban forest is a foundational contributor to sustainability goals of economic health, social interactions, and environmental function; and
WHEREAS, global environmental challenges such as climate change and
atmospheric carbon increases should be confronted locally by enabling natural processes
to perform optimally; and
WHEREAS, each year, “National Arbor Day” is celebrated by people throughout the
nation in recognition that trees and humans share an interdependence that should be
nurtured; and
WHEREAS, our pioneer spirit is represented by the cities namesake tree, El Palo
Alto; and
WHEREAS, March 7, 2013 the City of Palo Alto is observing “California Arbor
Day” by performing a thorough health assessment in conjunction with care for the El Palo Alto Redwood tree.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gregory Scharff, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf
of the City Council do hereby proclaim March 7, 2013 as “Palo Alto Arbor Day” and
urge all citizens and young adults to acknowledge the value of the urban forest, to care for trees and the environment, to support our City’s multi-faceted forestry program, and
to plant trees for future generations.
