RESOLUTION DONATING
SURPLUS FIRE EQUIPMENT TO OAXACA, MEXICO
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that Council adopt the attached Resolution donating surplus fire
equipment to Oaxaca, Mexico.
BACKGROUND
In. early 1999, Palo Alto Neighbors Abroad contacted the Fire Department
inquiring about the possibility of surplus fire equipment being donated to Palo
Alto’s sister city, Oaxaca, Mexico. Staff communicated with Oaxaca’s Fire Chief,
and confirmed its need for such equipment and the willingness to coordinate with
the Mexican government should the request be approved by the City Council.
DISCUSSION
The Fire Department has two surplus fire apparatus and equipment, a 1974 Crown
Fire Engine and a 1996 Braun Ambulance (including gurney and rescue
equipment). This equipment is no longer used by the Fire Department due to its
life cycle and its normal replacement schedule. The equipment will have a greater
value in continuing to protect life and property in Oaxaca, Mexico than if it were
sold to a second hand antique fire equipment dealer.
The Palo Alto .University Rotary Club has volunteered to ship the surplus
equipment to Mexicali, Mexico. The PEMEX Corporation has volunteered to
deliver the equipment from Mexicali to Oaxaca. Neighbor’s. Abroad has
coordinated with the government of Mexico for the transfer of the equipment.
RESOURCE IMPACT
The value Of the surplus equipment is approximately $10,000.
