PROCLAMATION
In honor of World Music Day
WHEREAS, "World Music Day", also known as "Fete de la Musique" or "Make Music Day" was
originally based on the idea of an American musician and was launched in 1982 by the French Ministry
of Culture; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, World Music Day festivals have for the past few years been held in
many cities including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles on a day in June close to the Summer
Solstice; and
WHEREAS, in Palo Alto, through the extensive efforts of Claude Ezran, World Music Day has been
celebrated since 2009 on Father's Day with increasing levels of citizen participation reaching more than
20,000 attendees in 201lfrom all over the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, World Music Day is now celebrated in over 100 countries around the World and is an
opportunity to join the rest of the World in celebrating music and the musical arts in all their forms in an
annual festival that is free to the public; and
WHEREAS, Palo Alto World Music Day is a celebration of the talent, values and diversity of Palo
Alto and the Bay Area, with a wide variety of musical gemes to please all tastes, and music originating
from many different countries; and
WHEREAS, because of the tireless efforts of Claude and his many volunteers, Palo Alto's World
Music Day is a non-commercial, all volunteer-based, community building event where amateur and
professional artists are equally welcomed and both give their performances free to us and where young
people are particularly encouraged to participate.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Yiaway Yeh, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the City Council
do issue this proclamation and express on behalf of the entire community our appreciation to Claude, all
the performers and volunteers for the time, effort and enthusiasm that they have expended to provide
Palo Alto a family-oriented event and a great way to spend Father's Day discovering musical groups and
meeting neighbors.
