Honoring the Healthy Cities Initiative
WHEREAS, the Healthy Cities Initiative created by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department helps
cities like Palo Alto adopt evidence-based best practices to become even healthier places for residents, employees
and visitors to live, work, and play; and
WHEREAS, the Palo Alto City Council adopted the Healthy Cities, Healthy Community Initiative in 2016
to create social, cultural, and physical environments that promote and support health, well-being, and creative
expression for ourselves, our families, and our communities; and
WHEREAS, promoting active, healthy lifestyles in Palo Alto will reduce residents’ risk for obesity and
chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers; and
WHEREAS, Palo Alto wants to continue being a leader in helping residents, employees, and visitors get
around town in a safe and healthy manner; and
WHEREAS, improving access to affordable and healthy food and beverages, and reducing access to
unhealthy beverages, helps our residents have healthier diets; and
WHEREAS, reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke in Palo Alto, particularly among youth
and in multi-unit housing facilities, worksites, and public spaces, are essential for the health of our residents.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, H. Gregory Scharff, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the City Council,
do hereby commend the Healthy Cities Initiative and our dedicated partners within the Santa Clara County Public
Health Department for helping to ensure that Palo Alto is a place that is safe and conducive for physical activity,
reduces exposure to tobacco products and tobacco use, and promotes access to healthy food and beverages for all
of our residents, employees, and visitors.
