Suicide Prevention Awareness Week
September 10-16, 2017
WHEREAS, the Palo Alto City Council recognizes suicide as a public health problem and suicide
prevention as a community responsibility; and
WHEREAS, suicide prevention efforts should be developed and encouraged to the maximum extent
possible; and
WHEREAS, suicide has proven to be preventable, is the 10th leading cause of all deaths in the United
States and the 2nd leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 and 24; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, one person commits suicide every 12.3 minutes and it is estimated
that 4.73 million people in the United States are survivors of suicide; and
WHEREAS, Project Safety Net coalition partners are collectively dedicated to reducing the
frequency of suicide attempts and the pain of survivors affected by suicides of loved ones through promoting
and providing mental health services, outreach and education, policy advocacy, and program evaluation; and
WHEREAS, according to a 2016 Project Safety Net community survey, participants cited young
people, awareness, and a caring community as factors currently present in Palo Alto that offer the greatest
hope and protections against youth suicide; and
WHEREAS, World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, 2017, is recognized internationally and
supported by the World Health Organization; and 2017 National Suicide Prevention Week is September 10
through September 16, 2017 as observed by the American Association of Suicideology.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, H. Gregory Scharff, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the City
Council, do hereby proclaim the week of September 10-16, 2017 as Suicide Prevention Awareness Week.
