HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-12-06 City Council (9)City of Palo Alto City Manager’s Report 2 TO:HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL FROM:CITY MANAGER DEPARTMENT:CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE DATE:DECEMBER 6, 2004 CMR: 509:04 SUBJECT:CONFIRMATION OF NICHOLAS MARINARO AS FIRE CHIEF RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that the City Council confirm the City Manager’s appointment of Nicholas Marinaro as Palo Alto Fire Chief. BACKGROUND Municipal Code Section 2.08.020 requires that the City Council confirm the City Manager’s appointment of City department heads. DISCUSSION Nicholas Marinaro has been with the City of Palo Alto since 1973, having started his career as a student firefighter with Stanford University in 1971. In his 30 plus years with the City he has been promoted from firefighter to apparatus-operator/paramedic, fire captain/paramedic, training officer/EMS officer, battalion chief, fire marshal and, in 1998, to deputy fire chief. Chief Marinaro has pursued training and educational opportunities vigorously, including completion of the Executive Development Institute for Fire Chiefs (2003), Executive Leadership Academy (2004) and Leadership Mid-Peninsula (2004). He has also served as President of the Santa Clara County Operations Chief Section (2000-01). Chief Marinaro’s community activities include work with the Ronald McDonald House/Stanford Children’s Hospital, Palo Alto Little League, AYSO Soccer, SAY Basketball, and Palo Alto Babe Ruth Baseball. He is an active member of the Palo Alto Lion’s Club. TIMELINE Chief Marinaro’s appointment, when confirmed by the Council, will be effective with the pay period beginning December 11, 2004.
