SUBJECT: PARK AND FACILITIES NAMING AND RENAMING POLICY
This is an informational report and no Council action is required.
DISCUSSION
On February 2, 2004, Council considered the renaming of the Arastradero Preserve. Due
to questions about the adequacy of the current City policy, Council decided to defer
consideration of renaming until the Policy and Services Committee has a chance to
discuss and provide recommendations to Council on the framework for naming and
renaming parks and other municipal facilities.
Staff will provide the Policy and Services Committee with a draft revised park and
facilities naming policy at its March 9, 2004 meeting. In its staff report to the Policy and
Services Committee, staff will include comments on the draft policy from the Palo Alto
Historical Association and the Parks and Recreation Commission. Depending upon the
outcome of the Policy and Services Committee meeting, Council should have the
opportunity to review and approve the policy in April 2004.
The revised policy will include specific criteria for the naming and renaming of City-
owned lands and facilities as well as a process for the review by the appropriate advisory
commission or committee of the City Council. The full review of suggested park names
has been factored into the timeline below as it relates to the possible renaming of the
Arastradero Preserve and the naming of the recently-dedicated SOFA Park.
