HomeMy WebLinkAboutStaff Report 9399 City of Palo Alto (ID # 9399) City Council Staff Report Report Type: Special Orders of the Day Meeting Date: 6/25/2018 City of Palo Alto Page 1 Summary Title: Pride Month Proclamation Title: Proclamation Recognizing the Month of June 2018 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month From: City Manager Lead Department: City Manager Attachments:  Attachment A: 2018 LGBT Pride Month Proclamation Proclamation LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL & TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH JUNE 2018 WHEREAS, in keeping with the City of Palo Alto’s traditions of civic brotherhood and inclusivity, the rainbow gay pride flag has for many years flown over the Palo Alto City Hall year-round as a beacon of solidarity to all members of the greater Palo Alto family; and WHEREAS, on December 12, 2016, in response to widespread concern in our community regarding national and regional incidents of hate crimes, discrimination and human rights violations, the City of Palo reaffirmed its commitment to a diverse, supportive, inclusive and protective community with the City Council’s unanimous approval of a resolution to proactively work to ensure the rights and privileges of everyone in Palo Alto, regardless of religion, ancestry, country of birth, immigration status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto continues to promote the quality of life for all members of our community through events such as the first ever Palo Alto LGBTQ+ Listening Forum, convened at the Mitchell Park Community Center on March 29, 2018, by the Palo Alto Human Relations Commission in partnership with the County of Santa Clara Office of LGBTQ Affairs; and WHEREAS, throughout the United States and around the world, communities recognize the month of June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month by waving flags of pride high and marching in parades and demonstrations to celebrate how far we have come and reaffirm our steadfast belief in the equal dignity of all members of our community; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo celebrates 2018’s LGBT Pride Month all month long with events including a discussion of LGBTQ services for youth at the Palo Alto Human Relations Commission on June 14, 2018, and the promotion of GLBT Book Month at all five of the City of Palo Alto’s libraries. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Liz Kniss, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto on behalf of the entire City Council do hereby proclaim the month of June 2018, as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. All citizens are encouraged to recognize and celebrate our shared values as a diverse, supportive, inclusive and welcoming community.
