These unsung heroes do the work that keeps our nation working; and across our nation, public employees take not only jobs, but oaths; and WHEREAS, many public servants risk their lives each day in service to the people of our communities, as well as provide safety inspections, operate our public facilities, and provide the diverse services demanded by the American people with integrity and efficiency; and WHEREAS, public servants provide the institutional knowledge, experience, and continuity that supports the long term sustainability of our community assets and organizational history; and WHEREAS, here in our city, our staff promotes and sustains the superior quality of life in Palo Alto, and in partnership with our community delivers cost-effective services in a personal, responsive, and innovative manner; and WHEREAS, over the past year alone, our City staff have:  Provided service to nearly 73,000 electric, water, and gas customer accounts;  Resurfaced 40 miles of streets;  Processed more than 19,000 Procurement Card transactions totaling $8.1 million to support City operations;  Checked out more than 1.5 million library items to over 1 million visitors;  Welcomed 91Percent of Palo Alto residents to a local or neighborhood park at least once;  Presented more than 180 public safety education presentations, trainings, or other sessions; and  Offered nearly 800 recreational classes and programs, maintained parks, and preserved more than 4,000 acres of open space. And much more, all with the professionalism we know and appreciate, day in and day out. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Liz Kniss, the Mayor of the City of Palo Alto do hereby proclaim that May 6, 2018 to May 12, 2018, is Public Service Recognition Week. All citizens are encouraged to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of government employees at all levels — federal, state, county and city – and especially our City of Palo Alto employees.
