SUBJECT: Recommendation from Council Appointed Officers Committee (CAO) to
Initiate City Attorney Recruitment
RECOMMENDATION
The Council Appointed Officers Committee (CAO) recommends that the Council direct staff
to initiate a focused Request for Proposals (RFP) for the recruitment of City Attorney.
BACKGROUND
City Attorney, Gary Baum, will be retiring from the City of Palo Alto at the end of October
2010. Accordingly, the Council Appointed Officers (CAO) Committee met on July 19, 2010
to discuss the recruitment process for the next City Attorney. The Committee voted
unanimously to recommend that staff initiate a focused Request for Proposals (RFP) from
executive recruiters who are experienced in this type of recruitment.
DISCUSSION
It is anticipated that the responses to the RFP will be received by the end of August and
presented to the CAO Committee in early September. At that time, the Committee will
review the proposals and determine the next steps. This process is similar to prior
recruitments for Council Appointed Officers.
POLICY IMPLICATIONS
This recommendation is consistent with existing City policies.
