PROJECT STATUS REPORT
This is an informational report and no Council action is required.
DISCUSSION
The CharlestordArastradero Corridor Trial project (Trial) is under construction this summer and
on schedule for completion by the opening of Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD)
schools in mid-August, This has been a fast-track project achieving design and construction in
less than eight months since City Council approval of the Trial implementation last December.
The Trial consists of adding a right turn lane and traffic signal modifications on Arastradero
Road at the entrance of Gunn High School and resurfacing (cape sealing) and restriping on
Charleston Road from Fabian Way to E1 Camino Peal. The restriping of Charleston will allow
for added pedestrian and bicycle access along this stretch of the Corridor along with some
automobile lane reductions to accommodate this.
Due to the accelerated schedule for this project there will be some additional underground utility
work that will take place after the resurfacing and restriping of Charleston between Alma Street
and E1 Camino Real. This is due to the Arbor Real private development project (former
Pdckey’s Hyatt site) and some long-planned City utility replacements that could not be fast
tracked to meet the Trial schedule. Staff is working closely with the Arbor Real developer to try
to get the utility services to this project in place before the resurfacing takes place on Charleston,
but there is no guarantee-that this will occur. Staff has prepared a map indicating what, where
and when the various City utility projects will take place (Attachment A). Following are the
planned utility projects (with their anticipated construction schedules) in the subject area as
shown on the map:
8" wastewater main installation to serve Arbor Real to be constructed starting in August
6" gas main replacement across the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board/Caltrain
tracks to be constructed starting in August
6" water main replacement on Park Boulevard connecting at Charleston scheduled for
January through March 2007

Specific schedules for each of the utility projects will be communicated to the schools and the
public before they proceed and each project will repair/resurface the pavement affected by their
project, dean up their project areas, and replace the Trial striping as needed so as to leave the
Trial in like new condition at the end.
