SUBJECT:SUCCESS OF NO PARKING ON SWEEP DAY PROGRAM IN TI:[E
AREA .BOUNDED BY PALO ALTO AVENI~, LYTTON AVENUE,
ALMA STREET AND BRYANT STREET
This is an informational report and no Council action is required.
DISCUSSION
On March 7, 2005, Council approved a program to restrict parking for street sweeping purposes
in the area bounded by Palo Alto Avenue, Lytton Avenue, Alma Street and Bryant Street
(CMR:165:05). The tria! program began in summer 2004 and between Fiscal Years 2004 and
Fiscal Year 2005, the street sweeping equipment was able to collect nearly 100 cubic yards more
debris on the route that included the affected area.
In general, compliance in the area has been good. No Parking signs have been placed at the
entrance to each block rather than on the trees or along each block in an effort to minimize the
visual impact to the area (CMR:329:05). While the Police Department has issued 1,210 parking
citations since the program’s inception, another positive aspect of the program has been the
ability to identify "sleeper" or abandoned vehicles left in the area. These vehicles are now cited
by the Police Department staff and are moved or removed in a timely manner.

Because of the success of the program in this one area, staff would like to expand No Parking on
Sweep Day to other areas of the City. Staff will return to Council for approval to expand the
program to other areas of the City with a fimeline of when each area will be instituted.
