DISCUSSION -
The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) recently honored the City of Palo
Alto with an Honorable Mention Award for Public Technology~.f~or the Emergency
Information Creeks web page. The purpose of the ASPA awards is to acknowledge
excellence in public service. Awards were presented at a dinner held May 13, 1999.
The Operations Division of Public Works in cooperation with the Administration Services,
Fire and Utifities Departments, developed the Creeks Web page in response to the
February 3, 1999 winter storm which caused the San Francisquito Creek flooding. It is a
communication medium designed to provide Palo Alto residents with live, real-time water
level data for Palo Alto creeks in a visually simplistic, easy-to-understand way. It is the first-
of-its-kind web page to provide local creeks and tide information. It displays in both graphic
and visual modes accurate levels of the Palo Alto storm d~ain flood basin, tide elevation at
the Palo Alto boat harbor, and creek levels at four locations. This information is updated
automatically on a periodic cycle. The site can be viewed at http://www.city.palo-alto.ca.us
